Maria LEVITSKA

Maria Levitska is the leading Ukrainian stage designer. Her professional activities resulted in creation of scenographic solutions for more than 200 theatre pieces, – operas, ballets, drama performances, – in Ukraine, Canada, Poland, Russia and Slovenia. Her stage settings were on a tour to Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Spain, just to mention a few.
Ms. Levitska has been the Director of Scenography for more than 25 years, and it is at the National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine where sets and hundreds of costumes for over 50 operas and ballets were born. Her multiform and multifaceted creation embraces classical operas Don Carlo, La traviata, Macbeth, Nabucco and Un ballo in maschera by Giuseppe Verdi, La Cenerentola by Gioacchino Rossini, Turandot by Giacomo Puccini and L'elisir d'amore by Gaetano Donizetti; Ukrainian operas – Zaporozhian Beyond the Danube by Semen Gulak-Artemovskiy and Moses by Myroslav Skoryk, as well as Russian opera classics - Iolanta by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, The Tale of Tsar Saltan by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Sets and costumes for ballets are similarly bright creations by M. Levitska: Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty by Pyotr Tchaikovsky; Cinderella by Sergei Prokofiev; Daphnis et Chloe by Maurice Ravel; Evenings on a Farmstead near Dykanka by Yevhen Stankovych; Zorba the Greek by Mikis Theodorakis; Caprices of Fate (Niccolo Paganini / Myroslav Skoryk). Stage is not the limit, and oil paintings, works in pastel and ink, in batik technique complete the portrait of Maria Levitska as an artist whose achievements in theatre realm are marked with the highest state awards.
